What to pack, by shoot type.

Camera gear is rigid, heavy and unforgiving of a bag chosen for the wrong day. This guide maps six common shoot types to a kit list, a carry weight, a packing style and — where one exists — a Tomei bag. Two of the six have no Tomei answer, and we say which.

Six shoot types

Each entry lists the kit that actually travels, a realistic loaded weight, the packing style that suits it, and the limit worth knowing before you commit.

Street & documentary

One body, one or two primes, long hours on foot. The bag is closed most of the day and must not read as camera gear.

Removable insert holds a body plus two lenses; the exterior has no branding and no lens-shaped bulges.

A gripped body or a 70–200 will not sit in the insert. Size down the lens, not the bag.

Wedding & event

Two bodies, fast glass, flash, and a twelve-hour day in rooms you cannot leave gear in. Weight is the constraint that ends the day early.

No Tomei bag is built for a full event kit. A 24-litre pack cannot take two bodies, fast zooms and lighting — carry a dedicated roller or a large photo pack for glass and use a small pack only for the day items.

35 litres with a suspended sleeve confirmed to a 16-inch laptop, so the whole trip — clothes, laptop, an insert of camera gear — travels above your seat.

Cabin 35 is drawn against commonly published cabin-bag allowances. That is a design target, not a guarantee; check your carrier's sizer before you rely on it.

Trail & wet-weather shoots

Rain on the approach, a short shooting window, and a camera that must come out fast and go away faster.

Sealed zippers and a coated interior handle sustained rain without stopping to fit a cover; 22 litres leaves room for layers around a padded cube.

There is no laptop sleeve, no rated attachment points and no immersion rating. It is not for technical climbing and it is not a substitute for a hard case.

Gear travels once, from door to table. Volume matters less than protection and cable order.

Stands and continuous lights belong in a rigid case or a stand bag. A backpack should carry only the laptop, the tethering kit and the small parts that get lost.

A repeated short journey: same route, same three or four items, five days a week. The failure mode is bulk, not capacity.

A flat back panel that behaves in a crowded carriage and a sleeve sized to a 14-inch laptop — enough for a light hybrid kit and nothing more.

Nothing above 14 inches, and no overnight loads. If the kit grows a second lens and a jacket, step up to Camera 24.

Four packing styles

The style decides the bag as much as the kit list does. Pick the style first, then check that the volume and access match it.

Ready-in-hand

One item accessible in under three seconds; everything else buried.

Camera stays on a strap or in a side-access compartment. The bag exists to hold what is not being used. Fastest style, lowest capacity.

Cube-and-core

A padded core of gear, soft goods packed around it.

A removable insert holds the fragile items; layers, food and water fill the space around it and act as the padding. Best when the shoot is one part of a longer day.

One-bag carry-on

Everything for the trip in a single cabin-sized bag.

Clothing compresses; camera gear does not. Budget the rigid volume first, then pack clothes into whatever is left. Weigh the loaded bag before the airport, not at it.

Two-bag split

Fragile and heavy in one bag; consumables and personal items in another.

Standard for event work. It keeps the heavy bag stationary and the light bag moving, and it means losing one bag never loses the whole day.

Fact check

Our product description states 2.8 lb. This specification states 3.2 lb. The two do not agree and we have not resolved which is correct.

Plan against 3.2 lb (1.45 kg) for airline weight limits.

Questions creators ask

What size backpack do photographers need for travel?

For a one-bag carry-on trip with a laptop, 30–35 litres is the practical floor: camera gear is rigid and does not compress, so budget its volume first and pack clothing into what remains. For a day shoot with one body and two lenses, 20–25 litres is enough.

Can one backpack cover both wedding work and travel?

No. A full event kit — two bodies, fast zooms, flash and backup drives — is 18–26 lb and needs dedicated protection, while travel packing is volume-limited and weather-driven. Tomei does not sell a bag for event work and says so rather than stretching a 24-litre pack to cover it.

Which Tomei bag is best for a mirrorless kit?

Camera 24. Its removable insert takes one body and two lenses, its sleeve fits a 15-inch laptop, and the exterior carries no branding. It is not for gripped bodies, long telephotos or lighting stands.

How much should a loaded camera backpack weigh?

Keep a full-day walking load under roughly 10 percent of body weight where possible. Street and hybrid kits land at 6–11 lb, trail kits at 10–16 lb, and event kits at 18–26 lb — which is why event work is normally split across two bags.

Is Camera 24's weight confirmed?

No. The product description states 2.8 lb and the specification panel states 3.2 lb. The conflict is unresolved and both figures stay published; assume the heavier figure when planning airline weight limits.
